Our local American Cancer Society is holding their Cattle Baron’s Ball this weekend.  It’s a Western themed fundraiser, and many American Cancer Society hosts them.  Ticket prices vary from $100.00 per ticket to $125,000.00 for a private box at elite concerts.  The Cattle Baron’s Balls originated in Texas in the ’70’s.  The Dallas Ball is held at Southfork Ranch, of tv’s ‘Dallas’ fame.  The event – the largest single-night fund-raiser in the nation for the American Cancer Society – is one of Dallas’ most extravagant charity balls. Organizers say they’ve raised $30 million for cancer research since 1974.  They expect to raise $4 million dollars at this year’s Dallas Ball.

Anyhoo, I’m going to be a volunteer for our local Cattle Baron’s Ball.  I don’t know what I’ll be doing.  They’ll have casino and boardwalk games, silent auctions, raffles, and more. (Several of the Balls feature mechanical bulls.)  I have nothing to wear.  I’m probably the only woman in Appalachia without anything ‘country’ or ‘western.’  Another theme is ‘Denim & Diamonds.’  I have plenty of both, but nothing flashy.  I better scrounge something up, or I’ll be washing dishes.
